Designing the "Heart" of Your Home

Are you ready to sit down and plan your dream kitchen? Most people identify the kitchen as the heart of their home. Every little detail is important, not only when it comes to prepping, cooking and serving meals, but also in making the kitchen a comfortable and inviting space for your family to gather. Here are several trends that are quickly moving to the top in kitchen design:

Colorful Cabinets
Although white kitchens will always be popular, we're starting to see more color in cabinetry, including navy, black, deep charcoals, and cream colors. These darker colors can provide a beautiful contrast when paired with lighter countertops, flooring and backsplashes.

Get Personal
More new homeowners are incorporating favorite color palettes, patterns and unique decorative items into their kitchens. These often include word art, area rugs and runners, family photos, as well as ceramics and other handcrafted items. Floating shelves are a wonderful way to display these items without making walls look busy.

Jeweled Surfaces
Bold tones tones such as ruby reds, golds, turquoises, emeralds, and sapphires are being seen more frequently in backsplashes, fabrics, cabinet hardware, and more. These sophisticated colors are applied in geometric shapes and interesting patterns that add extra dimension and a touch of glamour.

Flat Cabinet Fronts
Although Shaker is likely to remain the most popular style of cabinet door, flat-panel designs are racing to the top. These simple, detail-free designs present clean lines, allowing other textures throughout the kitchen to shine.

Visually Intriguing Textures
Greater depth and visual appeal can be added by mixing and matching "touch" elements such as shiny, textured, and roughly painted surfaces. An example might be tile with a wavy relief next to a honed countertop and cabinets with a high-gloss polish sheen.

More Compact, Smarter Appliances
While the kitchen is the place to share our day with family members, it's first and foremost the place for meal prep. New, hyper-efficient appliances seem to be making their debut every day. Homeowners can use their smartphones to program these appliances and monitor the meals they’re cooking. Technology is even available that can program appliances to turn on and off and adjust temperatures remotely!

Smaller appliances, such as wall-mounted mini refrigerators and built-in steam ovens can cut down on meal prep and cleanup time. Single units like induction elements are gaining in popularity as people use their large stoves and ovens less to accommodate more specific, personalized meal preparation.

Keeping It Low-maintenance
Whether it’s an easy-to-clean engineered product, such as porcelain and quartz, or large-format tiles, kitchens will feature surfaces that require less upkeep. For example, floors and backsplashes utilizing larger-format tiles with less grout are easier to clean.
