A can of paint, a free afternoon and some reasonable DIY skills are all it takes to dramatically transform a space. Consider placing an accent wall in a bedroom on the headboard wall to help anchor the bed in the room. How Much Home Do You Really Need?

According to U.S. Census data, the size of the average home in this country has nearly doubled since the 1950s? What's more, according a report released in June, 2012 by the Census Bureau, the size of our homes has jumped 62.6% just since 1973 -  topping out at 2,480 square feet in 2011. 
 
So, how are we using all that added square footage? The answer might surprise you. Even though the average family size is decreasing, we're designing and building our homes to include great rooms, four-car garages, man caves, walk-in closets, double master bedrooms, and guest suites. It seems the basic home of today would have been considered a mansion by the standards of any previous generation!

Ugh. Laundry Day. You Can Make It Better!

In many homes these days, the laundry area is just that, an area. Even when there's a basement, more and more people are opting to create a space in the house proper, where it's more convenient. One of the best options is to locate it on the second floor, after all, this is where the majority of it's generated and is returned to once it's washed.
 
All PATCO homes include a designated laundry area, the location being dependent on the specific home plan and the homeowners preference. In our ranch homes, for example, the laundry is located in the central hallway, easily accessible from all areas. Even when configured this way, tucked away behind bi-fold doors, there's plenty of room for storage above utilizing full length shelving.
